ToonLines

Yeeehaaa! The Coin made it to Siggraph 2002 (* ,* )!

In early 2001, my good friend Giancarlo Lari, asked me to use Movido for a cartoon style short film. With the permission of Hartmut Neven, CTO of Eyematic, we used Movido to capture the performances of Philippe Bergeron of both puppets. Motion capture was one aspect of the short, but Gianca created his own semi 3D cartoon style to set The Coin apart from previous computer movies. An entirely new Maya shader had to be invented to match Gianca's requirements.

The destination format was high resolution (HDTV) and rendering time was running out. So a fast outline shader with many user definable parameters and professional quality was needed. Hence ToonLines was born.

ToonLines is a post render shader plugin for Maya. It supports outlines, folds, wrinkles and intersections in various widths and colors on a per-object basis. Rendering time is about 20 seconds for a high resolution frame with millions of polygons. ToonLines was written entirely by Matthias Melcher.
